On May 19, the Jr. Apprentice program of the Hartford Consortium for Higher Education celebrated its third graduating class. The Bulkeley High School Jr. Apprentices were honored in a great ceremony attended by their business mentors, families and teachers.
Over the past few days, Jr. Apprentice staff have been going to site visits to the different workplaces hosting our students apprentices. We’ve had a great time learning more about our new sites, talking about their progress and goals for the rest of the program, and seeing the students and their mentors “in action.”
The day students were simultaneously anxiously awaiting and fearing finally happened..it was Interview Day! On January 14 and January 15, each of our apprentices interviewed for three apprenticeship positions based on their interests and career aspirations. Sighs of relief and eyes filled with pride followed as their matches were announced. Day 1 on the job is up next!
On Tuesday, December 15th, industry leaders and community partners from Hartford facilitated ‘mock interviews’ for our Jr. Apprentices. These interviews allow our students to put into practice all of the skills learned during the career-readiness class, and prepare for their upcoming Apprenticeship interviews in January.
On October 29, 2015, Jr. Apprentice supporters came together to celebrate our recently selected students, their families, and our professional-mentors. Attendees were welcomed by Principal Greene and Director, Eliana Cardeno; and had an opportunity to hear about why students applied to the program, and to our guest speaker and entrepreneur, Bill Kenney.
Here’s to a great and exciting year ahead!
We are so honored to be featured on Comcast channels in Connecticut. Thanks to our supporter Comcast for airing this 30 second spot. Check out the Jr. Apprentice commercial!
On June 11, Jr. Apprentice held its first Supporters’ Social at The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, CT. The evening celebrated our students’ achievements and leadership transition. Attendees were treated to a selection of wines and desserts by our event sponsors – NoRA Cupcakes, Wine Cellars 4, and Tyra Peluso Bakery.
One of our goals at Jr. Apprentice is for students to become “financially fit”. With their first paycheck comes education on how to manage, budget and invest their earnings as well as empower them to make responsible financial decisions. On January 14, we kicked off our personal finance unit with partners at Santander Bank. Students and their families learned about the benefits of banking, and opened their first student checking/saving accounts.
