Jr. Apprentice

Developing the Future Workforce through Work Experience

Microsoft Career Day

Had a great experience with Mike, a community development specialist for Microsoft. He taught our Pathways Academy of Technology and Design and Bulkeley High School students about the different job and training opportunities through Microsoft. He gave a history and highlights of Microsoft’s work since its founding in 1975. He gave tips on how to prepare for their interviews. At the end, we even got to play a round of jeopardy and some students tried out the store’s virtual reality technology. One of our students, Ta-John, said that this was his favorite field trip yet.

Thanks to Junior Achievement of Southwest New England for setting this job shadow day up!

Worksite Visits

We are so grateful to the incredible Hartford professionals and organizations that are committed to investing in our youth and have volunteered to host an apprentice this spring. Throughout March, Carla Hawkins, the Program Director, and Rachel Litvin, the Program Coordinator, visited all eighteen partnering apprenticeship sites. Our students are gaining such meaningful experiences, because of their dedicated professional-mentors. We look forward to celebrating them all at our upcoming graduation event at the Wadsworth Atheneum on May 11th.

Hartford Professionals lead mock interviews to help Jr. Apprentices practice their skills

Our students practiced their interview skills with local professionals to prepare them for their upcoming interviews with Apprentice sites. A big thank you to Donald Dugan, Joe Williams, Tracy Williams, Mike Mendoza, Jill Siegel, Carla Mangiafico, Annette Larabee, Ruth Cohen, Robert Schneider, Anna Croce, Marc Flood, John Giliberto, David Hawkins, Mairead Jacoby, Adam Marks, Karen Paulson, Kevin Paro, Colleen Zimmerman, Jeanne Maitland, Kevin Irizarry, Gerry Berthiaume, Martin Estey and Connor Henderson for volunteering their time to help prepare our students!

Jr. Apprentice at the CT Forum on the Future of Higher Education

On December 1st, a couple of Pathways Academy Jr. Apprentice students, Edwin Castellano and Joshua Kassahun, and our program Director and program Coordinator, Carla Hawkins and Rachel Litvin, had the opportunity to attend the CT Forum on the future of Higher Education. Learning about the innovation occurring in the Higher Ed community gives us hope for the future of our students (many of whom are about to go off to college!).

A big thanks to The Connecticut Forum for offering our students tickets and allowing us to be a part of this dialogue!

Jr. Apprentice Celebrates the beginning of our 2016-2017 year!

On October 23rd and 25th, Jr. Apprentice supporters came together to celebrate our recently selected students, their families, and our professional-mentors. Attendees were welcomed by our new Director, Carla Hawkins, and had an opportunity to hear from our students about why they applied to the program and what their career and educational goals are. Greg Jones, the founder of Legacy Foundation, was our inspiring guest speaker.

Here’s to an exciting year ahead!

The selected students represent a diverse range of backgrounds and interests. Our student blog has returned where you can learn more about our students, and our career-readiness curriculum. Congratulations to the newest Jr. Apprentices!
